The Red Shoes

Finally! She would be a princess, finally!

This time she will not give in! Mom must buy her those shiny red princess shoes!

She looked serious and determined and marched resolutely to the large shoe shelf. From the top row the red shoes were flashing at her. Oh, bother! She was too small!

“Mom, Mom, I want those red shoes there!”, she called. Mom looked up and wondered.

“You?? You really want those girl shoes?”, Mom replied.

“But you know you can’t kick a soccer ball around in them… or climb trees.. “, she gave her time to consider. “And you will need to put on a dress with these shoes.”

Mom looked at the princess-to-be doubtfully.

Hmm, Mom was right: a princess had to wear dresses. Ouch! She sighed. But those red jelly shoes just looked too tempting!

“Alright, I will wear a dress!”

The shoes appeared right in front of her feet. Yoo-hoo! She wanted to wear strappy shoes all the time!

Joyfully, she wanted to slip them on, but had to fumble a while. Those shoes didn’t want to be princess shoes, did they? Pooh, now just the straps!

Ok, did it! She fell in love with the little daisies attached on top of each shoe at once. That was just the thing for an almost five-year-old princess! Radiant with joy she looked at Mom.

“Honey, come over to me. You have to walk a few steps”, she heard Mom’s voice.

The happy little princess started to walk – and froze. A pain shot through her little feet. Someone must have stamped on her toes!

“Sweetie, what’s the matter with you? You can’t walk in those shoes, can you? Maybe they’re too small?”

The princess shoes too small? Never! That was impossible! She just couldn’t be walking now, because someone had hurt her!

The little princess cried. She was sure: princess shoes always fit perfectly. She cried, because she couldn’t be a princess now.

Mom came over to her, gave her a hug and a kiss: “You ARE my little princess. It doesn’t matter what you wear. True princesses one knows only with heart, my darling.”
